Biography
Joseph George Marohnic was born in Chippawa, Ontario in 1934. After attending school in both Canada and Croatia, he worked in construction in southern Ontario before attending teacher's college in Toronto in 1960. Later, he earned a General Arts Degree from the University of Toronto. After enjoying teaching elementary school from 1961 to 1978, he spent the last twelve years of his teaching career developing a ground breaking and rewarding alternate learning program (ALP) at the Atikokan High School. During this time, he also taught darkroom and photographic skills to elementary and high school students as part of their visual arts education.
During these years of teaching, J. Marohnic was also strongly committed to his own work in the darkroom. In 1978 he spent a year in Croatia with his family where he created a large body of work focusing on both urban and rural life in that country. Since retiring from teaching in 1990 he has travelled and photographed extensively throughout Europe, the American South West, and in Mexico.
Over the course of his photographic career, J. Marohnic has had sixteen solo exhibitions in Canada and in Europe, as well as participating in as many group shows. He has won numerous awards, been published in various magazines and newspapers, and has received several grants from the Ontario Arts Council supporting the continuation of his work.
J. Marohnic is a self-taught photographer who uses 35 mm, medium & large format cameras, and digital since 2008.
